What Is the Right Age to Start Preschool?

October 09, 2026

There is no single right age. Most children are ready for a short, gentle preschool morning somewhere between 1.5 and 3 years. Readiness depends more on the child than on the date of birth. In Montessori, children from 1.5 years join a toddler class designed for their size, pace and need for movement.

Signs your child may be ready

  • Walks steadily and enjoys moving around
  • Shows interest in other children
  • Can spend a little time away from you with a familiar adult
  • Wants to “do it myself” — pouring, carrying, putting on shoes
  • Follows simple one-step requests

Your child does not need to speak in sentences or know letters to start. Those come with time, and a good toddler class supports them.

Is 1.5 or 2 years too early?

Not when the class is built for toddlers. A good toddler environment is small and calm. Furniture is child-sized and the morning is short, so a young child feels secure rather than overwhelmed. Children of this age learn by doing real things with their hands: washing, pouring, sorting, dressing.

Settling in

Most children need one to three weeks to settle. These steps help:

  1. Visit the classroom together before the first day.
  2. Keep goodbyes short, warm and the same every day.
  3. Always come back at the time you promised.
  4. Keep the home routine steady in the first weeks: sleep, meals, play.

Some tears are normal and usually pass within minutes of a parent leaving. The guides will tell you honestly how your child is doing.

Common questions

My child doesn’t talk much yet. Is that a problem?

No. Toddlers understand far more than they say. Language grows quickly in a classroom full of conversation, songs and names for real objects.

Can my child join in the middle of the year?

Yes. Kidoz admits children through the year when a place is available.

Does my child need to be toilet trained?

No. Toilet training and independence are at the core of the Kidoz programme. We work on them gently, in step with home.
